What is Smart Start? |

Smart Start is North Carolina's nationally recognized and award-winning early childhood initiative designed to ensure that young children enter school healthy and ready to succeed. Smart Start is a public-private initiative that provides early education funding to the state's 100 counties. Smart Start funds are administered locally through non-profit organizations called partnerships. Our local partnership, the Buncombe County Partnership for Children, is also known as Smart Start of Buncombe County. |

At the local level, services vary depending on need, and 80 local partnerships exist statewide to administer funding and programs. Smart Start funds are used to improve the quality of child care, make child care more affordable and accessible, provide access to health services, and offer family support.
Smart Start of Buncombe County is a non-profit organization and one of the local partnerships mentioned above. As part of a successful state-wide public-private partnership, Smart Start of Buncombe County coordinates, plans and funds programs for children aged birth through five and their families, and contracts with local organizations to implement these programs.
Together, community volunteers who serve on Smart Start's board, Smart Start staff members, funded child care providers, schools, organizations, and local businesses strive to realize Smart Start's mission: promoting high quality, affordable, early childhood care and education to ensure that our young children are healthy and prepared to succeed when they enter school.
