Outdoor Play Ideas - Spring
Color Matches
Explore the colors of nature. Cut different colors of construction paper into squares or circles into a size your child can hold onto. Or go to your local paint store and ask for a couple of paint swatch cards. Ask your child to pick a color. Go outside with him and encourage him to find items in nature that are the same color.
A Child’s Garden
Create a special area in the garden for your child, (or give them their own containers to use.) Let her dig and prepare the soil, plant her own seeds and water them. She can even weed her little garden. Encourage her to check on the garden daily and help her to look for sprouts or flowers and be sure to discuss with her what is happening in her little corner of the garden.
Nature Walk
Take your child on a treasure hunt outside. Give him child-friendly magnifying glasses to explore under rocks, the inside of a flower, or the different textures of tree bark. Give him a small paper bag to collect special finds from the ground – rocks, leaves, feathers or sticks – to sort and count later.
Egg Heads
Crack egg shells close to the top. Wash the egg shell thoroughly and let dry. Invite your child to gently draw a face on the outside of the egg shell using permanent markers. Next, add some soil and tap some grass seed into the soil and water it lightly. Set the eggs in the carton and place it in a sunny window. Make sure your child keeps the soil moist but not soggy. Within a few days the grass will begin to sprout, making “hair” for your child’s egg head!
