Programs: Transition to KindergartenA Director and part-time Coordinator will promote children's successful transition to kindergarten through three activity components — staff development, technical assistance, and parent education. Contracted staff may be used to translate materials into other languages such as Spanish or Russian. The project will focus on children 3 to 5 years of age, their families, childcare providers, kindergarten teachers and principals. Staff development activities will be offered to childcare providers and kindergarten teachers which help to: 1) forge a common understanding of kindergarten readiness; 2) prepare staff to provide families with consistent information on competencies contributing to children's school readiness; 3) foster networking opportunities; and 4) increase childcare providers' knowledge of Asheville City School's Magnet Program to support families in their school selection process. Technical assistance will be offered to childcare programs to promote and sustain the development and implementation of Transition to Kindergarten Plans. Technical assistance will include group trainings on plan development, sharing resource materials, and consultation as needed. Parent education will be provided on developmental expectations of children, school readiness competencies, and strategies for supporting children's skill development. Project staff will be available to make presentations at Parent Information Nights based at childcare programs and community locations and will offer support to the county's two Local Education Agencies for their Kindergarten Orientation Nights.
